For our anniversary, Rob took me to Durham. I am in love with how old everything is around here. Durham is a modern city built around a beautiful castle and cathedral. We followed a cobblestone road through a quaint part of town to get to the cathedral.
We walked around the grounds and through the cathedral (no pictures allowed inside). Rob paid for the tour last time so he gave us the condensed version. Both kids were great inside so we were able to spend time admiring the beautiful stain glass windows and stunning ceilings.
Once out on the lawn, Luke decided it was time to throw a crazy fit (we are still not sure why), so we had some fun time-out time on the grounds. At one point both kids were in total meltdown mode and everyone within a mile radius was starring at our exciting little family.
We finally got the kids to calm down by taking them to a local pub for club sandwiches and french fries. The pub was really just a laid-back restaurant with comfy chairs and small tables situated apart from each other so we had own own little area to relax.
Our our way out of the city, we found a cafe on the Wear River that served specialty hot chocolate. We stopped in and ordered one orange and one hazelnut hot chocolate, both with cream on top. It was the perfect ending to our visit to Durham.
Funny Story: While enjoying our hot chocolate the two women sitting next to us started talking to Harper. One of them told us how grateful she was to see parents who had taught their kids to be so well behaved. She said not more than an hour ago she was at the cathedral and saw a little boy throwing a big tantrum. Rob smiled and openly confessed that that little boy was in fact the same little boy she was sitting next to now. We all had a big laugh.
