Our little Luke has quite the big personality, but can't seem to keep any meat on his bones. He is in the 50th percentile for height and not even on the charts for weight. If I had a penny for every pound this little guy weighed, I would not be very rich. He hits all his development milestone and all his tests have come back normal, but I can't help but worry a little. Who can help it when the endocrinologist looks at your child and says "M'am (okay, so he was at least 20 years older than me) your child is very, very underweight (yeah, I know, why else would we be here!?)." What the what? We offer this kid food ALL THE TIME! I make sure that he gets his fruits and vegetables each day but besides that, he can have whatever he wants. He currently likes oatmeal, beans and french fries. We have even implemented Pediasure which should give him extra calories and nutrients. You would think that would do the trick, but no, he still can't ride in the forward facing car seat like all the other one-year-olds because he doesn't meet the minimum weigh requirement. Poor guy, riding backwards is the pits. He has to go in for another test in a few weeks and the doctor is throwing around some pretty scary sounding disease possibilities, but I am like, my little boy is so happy and normal and smart and strong and active, so who cares if he is a little thin.
So what is a mother of a skinny baby to do? Open up little guy, here comes the butter sticks and Krispy Kremes! Beef up that belly and pack on those pounds. We'll show 'em!

Neither you or Rob are very heavy either. I wonder if you looked at the growth records for either of you, if you'd find that Luke's just like you or Rob. I'd trust your instincts. You could find a different doctor. My sister-in-law took her 4 year old to a specialist for being underweight and the specialist said that the girl was healthy and just fine.

I changed my daughter's car seat before she met those requirements because she was screaming and totally inconsolable on one ride. She was a lot happier right away.

I hear ya... Lily's GI Doctor gave us a list of things she should eat and we're supposed to put butter and cheese on like everything. She's 18 months and her doctor said prob 2 more months til she'll be 20 lbs and in a new car seat. Don't let anyone make you feel bad though, he's perfectly happy and has a fast metabolism I'm sure and you're a wonderful mother.

Send him on a domestic mission as soon a possible. That did it for me.

I totally understand your worries, but I think it's kinda interesting that your doctors are so concerned and you're having to see specialists etc. Maybe there's something else to it other than just his weight?

Ellis weighed 15 lbs 15 oz at 12 months,
17 lbs 11 oz at 15 months
19 lbs 5 oz at 18 months
and didn't break 20lbs until she was 19 months.

While I was concerned about her being thin, the doctor always reassured me that she was fine and they would just keep watching her weight gain. She told me that it also took calories to grow in height and not just in weight, so as long as Luke is still doing well for height (way better than Ellis), that should be comforting.
I think it would be a lot harder if the doctor was feeding into your concerns.

Ellis' doc suggested milkshakes with ice-cream every night, but she wasn't into it.

Ooh, can I come over when you're feasting on butter sticks and doughnuts? I'll bring a pie o' lard too. Can I have your apt. # again? Yours in the last, loneliest Christmas card just waiting to be sent out but I forgot the number you told me!

All I can say, is that I think Luke is adorable!! Who cares if he's a skinny little guy, he looks handsome!! So forget the Dr.'s mean comments :)

Don't stress!! Tyler just barely got back on the weight chart (she's 3, weighs a whopping 26 lbs fully dressed and is in the 6%). Her DR put her on pediasure only as a precaution, but wasn't too concerned. I think it made it worse because it took her longer to learn how to eat. Charlotte weighs 17.9 lbs naked is in the 1st percentile for weight and maybe in the 20's for height. We have a new dr now who says she is absolutely fine and pointed out that her mother is a midget . . . Sounds like a lot of expensive tests to me . . . I would get a second opinion. Some kids are just tiny for a while! Your new haircut is way cute, hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
